253 Collective intern lends a hand

Posted on Updated on

Design promo material, help staff a shift, set up a show and in general,  lend a helping hand. That’s what Thierry Fortuner has been doing for the past few months. He’s interning with the 253 Collective and helping with normal operations of the member-run group. We asked him a few questions about his education, future plans, and his take on the importance of art in the community.

  • What is your educational background? My educational background includes studying digital media at Clover Park Technical College, as well as fine art and animation at The Evergreen State College.
  • What are you currently studying? I am currently studying nonprofit management at University of Washington Tacoma. The class is a study on nonprofit ideals and community development, and how to expand and grow nonprofit organizations.
  • What are your future educational goals? I might pursue a master’s degree in the future, but I am not sure at this time.
  • How did you hear about the 253 Collective group? My teacher in the program at UwT, Stephen DeTray, recommended the group as an arts collective in the Tacoma area.
  • What do you like most about working with the 253 Collective group? I believe that the group serves an important function of bringing local art to the area, especially in the city of Tacoma.
  • What do you think about the importance of art in a community, and how can individuals get more involved in the arts? Any community artistic endeavor is important, as local art reflects the spirit of it’s origins. I believe it allows members of a community to connect with each other through shared ideas. I believe that due to it’s nature anyone can become involved in local art, either through direct cultural contributions or recognizing it’s reflection of the community.
